AUTUMN TERM 2026 IN FMNS

THE AUTUMN TERM is always an exciting time in FMNs, filled with new projects, creative learning, and memorable experiences.

AUTUMN 1

History – Maafa

In History, pupils will be learning about Maafa, a Kiswahili word meaning “great disaster” or “great tragedy.” The term is often used to describe the history and lasting impact of the transatlantic slave trade, enslavement, colonialism and the experiences of African and Black communities.

We will begin by exploring the transatlantic slave trade, including why it developed, how enslaved African people were treated and the impact of the trade on individuals, families and communities. We will then learn about life for Black people after the abolition of slavery, considering the continued discrimination and inequalities they faced.

As we move into the 20th century, pupils will investigate Jim Crow laws and segregation in the United States. We will explore how racist laws and practices affected everyday life, education, employment, voting and access to public spaces, and consider how Black communities challenged injustice and fought for equality.

We will study important figures and events from the Civil Rights Movement, including Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Pupils will consider the courage and determination of people who campaigned for civil rights, as well as the importance of peaceful protest and collective action.

Throughout the topic, pupils will develop their understanding of slavery, racism, prejudice, discrimination, segregation, equality and human rights, while considering how historical events have shaped the world today.

Science – The Circulatory System
In Science, pupils will be learning about the human circulatory system and how it keeps our bodies alive and healthy.

We will explore the main parts of the circulatory system, including the heart, blood and blood vessels, and learn how they work together to transport oxygen, nutrients and water around the body. Pupils will discover how the heart acts as a pump and how blood vessels carry blood to and from different parts of the body.

We will also investigate how exercise, diet and lifestyle can affect the way our heart and circulatory system function. Through practical activities, research and scientific enquiry, pupils will develop their understanding of how to keep our bodies healthy and use scientific vocabulary to explain their ideas.

Art – Colour Theory
In art, the term’s focus is on Colour Theory. Students will learn about primary and secondary colours, mixing techniques, and how artists use colour to express mood and emotion in their work.

AUTUMN 2

The second half of the AUTUMN TERM continues to offer rich learning opportunities across the curriculum, combining creativity, curiosity and discovery.

Geography – Frozen Kingdom

Get ready to explore the wonders of the Arctic and Antarctic! In our Frozen Kingdom project, we will uncover the mysteries of these icy landscapes, learning about the extreme climates, unique wildlife, and the ways in which people and animals have adapted to survive in such harsh environments. From icy tundras to towering glaciers, we will explore the science and geography of the coldest places on Earth.

Science – The Circulatory System (continued from autumn 1)

Art – Inuit Art

Our Art focus this term will be on the beautiful and inspiring world of Inuit Art. The Inuit people, native to Arctic regions, have a rich artistic tradition that includes sculpture, printmaking, and storytelling through imagery. We will study the unique styles and techniques used by Inuit artists and create our own artwork inspired by their cultural expressions.

AUTUMN TERM TRIPS AND EXPERIENCES

  • Residential at PGL Boreaton Park: From 21st–23rd September, pupils will enjoy their much-anticipated residential, taking part in exciting outdoor activities, building resilience, and strengthening teamwork skills.
  • London: On Friday 13th November, FMNs will visit our capital city, travelling on trains and tubes, with a very special visit to The Houses of Parliament.

This term promises to be both inspiring and enriching, giving children the chance to deepen their knowledge, ignite their imaginations, and create memories that will last long after the term has ended.
